What does this PDF Text Extractor do?
This free online PDF text extractor pulls all the selectable text out of a PDF file and gives it to you as plain text — entirely in your browser. You can extract text from all pages or just a range, preserve the original line breaks, copy the text to your clipboard, or download it as a .txt file.
The tool uses PDF.js, Mozilla's battle-tested PDF rendering library that powers Firefox's built-in PDF viewer. For each page, it reads the PDF's internal text content stream and reconstructs the text by reading the coordinates and spacing of every text item. This lets it insert line breaks where the original document had them, so the output reads naturally instead of running everything together on one line.
Because everything runs locally, your PDF never leaves your device — there is no upload, no server processing, and no data storage.
How to extract text from a PDF
- Upload your PDF: Drag and drop a PDF into the upload zone, or click to browse your device.
- Choose your options: Optionally enter a page range like
1-5, 8, 10-15. Leave it empty to extract every page. Toggle Preserve line breaks and Add page markers as you prefer. - Click Extract Text: The tool loads the PDF with PDF.js and reads the text content of each selected page.
- Review the result: The text area shows the extracted text with a live word and character count. Page navigation buttons let you jump between pages.
- Copy or download: Click Copy Text to grab everything to your clipboard, or Download .txt to save a plain text file. The downloaded file is named after your original PDF.

When would you need to extract text from a PDF?
- Editing content: You need to quote, reuse, or edit a PDF's text but PDFs aren't easy to edit directly.
- Copying paragraphs: Some PDFs block copy-paste. This tool reads the text directly so you're not blocked.
- Data processing: Feed extracted text into a spreadsheet, script, or AI tool for analysis.
- Translating documents: Get plain text first, then run it through a translation service.
- Accessibility: Convert a PDF to text so it works with screen readers that struggle with PDF layout.
- Archiving notes: Store the text content of PDFs in a lightweight plain-text format.
Selectable text vs scanned PDFs
There are two kinds of PDFs in the world, and only one of them can be read by a text extractor like this one.
| PDF type | How to identify it | Can this tool extract text? |
|---|---|---|
| Digital / text-based | You can select and highlight text inside the PDF viewer | Yes — full extraction works |
| Scanned / image-only | Text looks like a picture; you cannot select it | No — needs OCR software |
| Mixed | Some pages have selectable text, others don't | Partial — pages without text return empty |
To quickly check which kind you have: open the PDF, try to drag-select a sentence, then copy and paste it somewhere. If it pastes as real text, this extractor will work. If nothing pastes, the PDF is image-only and you'll need an OCR tool.
Tips for cleaner extraction
- Use a page range for large PDFs. Extracting 500 pages at once can be slow. Pull just the chapters you need.
- Toggle "Preserve line breaks" off if your output has too many awkward breaks. Turning it off gives you a single continuous paragraph.
- Turn off "Add page markers" if you plan to paste the text into a document or code editor and don't want the page numbers mixed in.
- Check for column layout issues. Some two-column PDFs interleave the columns. If the output looks scrambled, extract the columns page by page.
- Watch out for ligatures and custom fonts. Some PDFs encode ligatures (like "fi" or "fl") as single characters, which may appear as odd symbols in the extracted text.
- Combine with text cleanup tools. After extraction, run the text through the Remove Extra Spaces or Whitespace Cleaner tools for a tidy result.
