What does this Countdown Calculator do?
This free online countdown calculator creates live, ticking timers for any date and time you choose. Whether you're counting down to a holiday, a product launch, a project deadline, a concert, or a birthday, this tool shows you exactly how many days, hours, minutes, and seconds remain — and it updates every single second.
You can save multiple countdowns at once, each one with its own name and target date. Everything is stored locally in your browser, so your countdowns are still there when you come back. No account, no signup, no data leaving your device.
Once a countdown reaches zero, it automatically flips to counting up — showing you how much time has elapsed since the event. That makes it just as useful for tracking anniversaries and past milestones as it is for upcoming ones.
How to use the Countdown Calculator
- Name your event: Type a short name in the "Event name" field — something like "Product Launch", "Trip to Tokyo", or "Exam Day".
- Pick a date and time: Use the date-time picker to choose the exact moment you want to count down to. You can pick any future (or past) date.
- Click Add: The countdown appears immediately — both in the featured banner at the top and in the "Your Countdowns" grid below.
- Use a preset: Not sure what to count down to? Click any of the quick preset buttons (New Year, Christmas, Next Weekend, etc.) to create a countdown in one click.
- Watch it tick: Every countdown updates in real time — days, hours, minutes, and seconds all refresh automatically every second.
- Remove when done: Click the × on any countdown card to delete it. Your other countdowns stay intact.

How the countdown breaks down time
The countdown shows four units: days, hours, minutes, and seconds. Here's how they relate to each other:
| Unit | Equals | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 minute | 60 seconds | — |
| 1 hour | 60 minutes | 3,600 seconds |
| 1 day | 24 hours | 1,440 minutes / 86,400 seconds |
| 1 week | 7 days | 168 hours / 10,080 minutes |
| 1 month | ~30.44 days | Average, since months vary in length |
| 1 year | ~365.25 days | Average, includes leap years |
Because months and years have irregular lengths, this calculator expresses the remaining time in days (not months or years). That's the most accurate way to display a countdown — a "3-month" countdown would be ambiguous, but "91 days, 4 hours" is precise.
Tips for getting the most out of your countdowns
- Pin this page: Add this tool to your browser bookmarks or home screen, so you can check your countdowns with one tap.
- Be specific with the time: If your event starts at a specific hour, set the exact time — otherwise the countdown will run to midnight.
- Use descriptive names: "Team Meeting — Q4 Planning" is more useful than "Meeting" when you have several countdowns saved.
- Track past events too: You can set a past date to see how long it's been since an event — useful for anniversaries and project milestones.
- Remember the device rule: Countdowns are stored in your browser on this device. If you clear your browser data, they'll be gone. For events you really care about, note the date separately.
