What does this GPA calculator do?

This free online GPA calculator works out your grade point average using the weighted method — the same method most colleges and universities use. You add each course, enter how many credit hours it's worth, and pick your letter grade. The calculator multiplies the grade points by the credit hours to get quality points, adds everything up, and divides by the total credits.

The result is your weighted GPA on the standard 4.0 scale, with plus and minus grades included. Everything updates live as you type, so you can experiment with different grades and see instantly how they affect your average. No "calculate" button, no waiting, no page reloads.

Because it runs entirely in your browser, your grades and credit hours never leave your device. There's no signup, no account, and no data stored on any server. Close the tab and everything is gone.

How to calculate your GPA

  1. Enter the course name: Type a short name for each course — for example, "Calculus I" or "English 101". The name is for your reference only; it doesn't affect the calculation.
  2. Enter the credit hours: Each course is worth a certain number of credits. A typical course is 3 or 4 credits, but labs and seminars can be 1 or 2. Check your course syllabus if you're unsure.
  3. Pick your grade: Choose the letter grade you earned from the dropdown. The calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale with plus/minus grades.
  4. Add more courses: Click the "Add Course" button to add another row. There's no limit — add as many as you need.
  5. Read your GPA: The large number at the top of the results panel is your GPA. Below it you'll see your total credits, quality points, and course count.

If you want to calculate your cumulative GPA, include every course you've taken across all semesters. If you want to calculate your semester GPA, include only the courses from that semester. To calculate your major GPA, include only the courses that count toward your major.

How GPA is calculated

The grade point average is a weighted average of your grades, where each course is weighted by its credit hours. The formula is simple:

GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Where Quality Points = Grade Points × Credit Hours for each course.

Let's walk through an example. Suppose you took four courses:

CourseCreditsGradeGrade PointsQuality Points
Calculus I4A4.016.0
English 1013B+3.39.9
Chemistry4B3.012.0
History3A−3.711.1
Total1449.0

GPA = 49.0 ÷ 14 = 3.50

That's the weighted GPA. Notice that the 4-credit courses (Calculus and Chemistry) have a bigger impact on the result than the 3-credit courses (English and History). That's exactly how the weighted method is supposed to work.

Standard 4.0 grade scale

This calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale with plus and minus grades, which is the most common system at colleges and universities in the United States. Some schools use variations — for example, some don't count plus/minus grades, and some use a 4.3 scale for A+. If your school uses a different scale, adjust your inputs accordingly.

Letter GradeGrade PointsPercentage (typical)Description
A+4.397–100%Exceptional
A4.093–96%Excellent
A−3.790–92%Excellent
B+3.387–89%Good
B3.083–86%Good
B−2.780–82%Good

Note: Percentage ranges vary by institution. The values shown are typical but not universal. Always check your school's official grading policy if the exact percentage matters.

Tips for calculating and improving your GPA

  • Use your official transcript. Enter the exact credit hours and grades from your transcript or student portal. Guessing can lead to an inaccurate GPA.
  • Don't forget labs and tutorials. Lab sections often carry separate credit hours. Include them if they appear as separate courses on your transcript.
  • Check whether your school counts plus/minus grades. Some institutions treat A− the same as A, or don't count plus/minus at all. Adjust accordingly.
  • Calculate your GPA before and after retaking a course. Many schools replace the original grade when you retake a course, which can significantly boost your GPA. Use the calculator to see the impact.
  • Use the calculator to plan your next semester. Enter your current GPA and credits, then add hypothetical courses with target grades to see what GPA you can achieve.
  • Focus on high-credit courses. A 4-credit course has more impact on your GPA than a 1-credit elective. A strong performance in high-credit courses moves the needle faster.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points. Add all quality points together, then divide by the total credit hours. The result is your weighted GPA. This calculator does all of that automatically.
A weighted GPA accounts for the number of credit hours each course is worth. A 4-credit course affects your GPA more than a 1-credit course. This calculator uses the weighted method, which is the standard at most colleges and universities.

Yes. If you want to calculate cumulative GPA, include all your courses from every semester. Alternatively, calculate each semester separately and then combine them using the total quality points and total credit hours from each semester.
The calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale with plus/minus grades: A+ = 4.3, A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7, and F = 0.0. Many schools use variations, so adjust if your school differs.
Yes. Click the "Add Course" button to keep adding rows. There is no limit — add as many courses as you need.
Only include the courses that count toward your major. Enter those courses with their credit hours and grades, and the calculator will give you your major GPA. Check with your department if you're unsure which courses count.
Absolutely. Everything runs in your browser using JavaScript. Your grades, credit hours, and course names never leave your device — there is no server processing, no logging, and no data storage.
A few reasons: your school may use a different grade scale (some don't count plus/minus, some use a 4.3 scale for A+), may round differently, or may include courses you didn't include. Check your school's official GPA calculation method if the difference matters.
