What does this Upside Down Text Generator do?

This free online upside down text generator converts ordinary text into flipped text using Unicode characters that look like their original letters rotated 180 degrees. For example, the letter 'a' becomes 'ɐ' and 'e' becomes 'ǝ'. Because the flip is part of the text itself — not a font or a CSS style — the upside down look survives copy-paste into Instagram bios, TikTok captions, Discord usernames and anywhere else that accepts plain text.

Unlike a word processor's flip button (which doesn't exist) or a CSS rotation (which gets stripped when you paste), this tool replaces each character with a different Unicode code point that visually resembles the rotated original. That means the effect travels with the text itself.

Everything runs locally in your browser. The text you type never leaves your device, there is no signup, and there are no usage limits. Flip as much text as you want, as many times as you want.

Flip modes available

Style Example Best for
Upside Down (flip + reverse) plɹoM ollǝH True 180° rotation — reads correctly when you turn your phone upside down
Reversed Only dlroW olleH Backwards text without flipping the letters
Mirrored Hǝllo Wɔɹlp Horizontal flip — letters mirror left-to-right without reversing order
Flipped Letters Only Hǝllo Wɔɹlp Letters flipped but line order preserved — no reversing
Upside Down (No Reverse) Hǝllo Wɔɹlp Flipped letters without reversing the line — reads like normal with letters rotated
Backwards Text dlroW olleH Reverse the entire string, character by character

Not sure which one to use? Start with Upside Down — it produces the classic 180° flipped text most people expect. Switch to Reversed Only when you want the letters to stay readable but the order reversed, and Mirrored for a true left-to-right flip.

How does upside down text work?

The trick is simple: Unicode, the standard that assigns a code point to every character in every writing system, includes a set of letters that visually look like Latin letters rotated 180 degrees. These are often called "turned" letters — the Unicode name of 'ɐ' is literally Latin Small Letter Turned A.

This tool builds a mapping from normal letters to their turned equivalents, then — for the true upside-down effect — reverses the order of the characters so the result reads correctly when you rotate your screen. Here's how a few of the most common letters map:

Normal Flipped Unicode name
aɐLatin Small Letter Turned A
bqLatin Small Letter Q
eǝLatin Small Letter Turned E
hɥLatin Small Letter Turned H
tʇLatin Small Letter Turned T
yʎLatin Small Letter Turned Y
AⱯLatin Capital Letter Turned A
EƎLatin Capital Letter Reversed E
T⊥Up Tack

A handful of letters and symbols — like H, I, N, O, S, X, Z and most digits other than 6 and 9 — look the same when rotated, so they stay unchanged. That's why a flipped word can still be readable in places even after the transformation.

Where flipped text works — and where it doesn't

Works great on

  • Instagram — bios, captions, comments and Notes
  • TikTok — bios, captions and comments
  • Discord — usernames, server nicknames and messages
  • WhatsApp — messages, group names and your About line
  • X (Twitter) — posts and bios
  • Facebook and LinkedIn — posts and bios
  • YouTube — video titles and descriptions

Use with caution

  • SEO and website content — search engines may not index flipped Unicode characters as regular letters. For websites, keep body content in standard text.
  • Screen readers — assistive technology may read flipped characters letter by letter or by their Unicode names, making the text unintelligible. Use flipped text for short decorative accents only.
  • Resumes and job applications — applicant tracking systems (ATS) often fail to read flipped characters. Keep styled text out of resumes.
  • Older devices — a few older fonts may show blank boxes for some of the rarer Unicode characters. The core letters a, b, e, h, o, t and y have the widest support.

Creative uses for upside down text

Flipped text is a small trick with an outsized effect. Some of the most popular uses:

  • Social media jokes — Flip a punchline so your readers have to rotate their phone to get it.
  • Riddles and puzzles — Hide messages in plain sight for treasure hunts, escape rooms or party games.
  • Usernames and bios — Stand out in a sea of normal-letter handles on Discord, TikTok or Instagram.
  • Design elements — Use flipped letters as decorative accents in headers, posters or invitations.
  • Fun messages — Send a flipped "I love you" to a friend and watch them try to read it.
  • Creative writing — Add a subtle visual disruption to a poem or caption where the character order matters.

Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermark, no hidden charges. Generate as much flipped text as you want, as many times as you want, for personal or commercial use.
When you rotate a line of text 180 degrees, each letter flips AND the order of letters reverses. Otherwise the text would read backwards when you turn your screen upside down. This tool reverses the order by default so the result reads correctly when rotated. You can turn reversing off if you only want the letters flipped.
Upside down text rotates each character 180 degrees (flipped both vertically and horizontally) and reverses the line order. Mirrored text flips each character horizontally only (left to right), without reversing the line order. They produce different visual effects.
Yes. Digits and common punctuation marks have upside-down equivalents. For example, 6 becomes 9 and 9 becomes 6, and the question mark becomes ¿. Some symbols do not have a flipped version and stay as-is.
A few capital letters and symbols do not have a true upside-down Unicode equivalent. For example, letters like H, I, N, O, S, X and Z look nearly the same when rotated, so they stay as they are. The flipped form of other capitals may not be a perfect visual match on every device.
Paste the flipped text back into the input box and flip it again — the process is symmetric, so flipping twice restores the original text. Make sure to use the same flip mode that you used initially.
Yes. Because the flipped text uses standard Unicode characters, it works in Instagram bios, TikTok captions and comments, Facebook, WhatsApp, Discord, Twitter/X and most other apps that accept plain text.
No. Screen readers and assistive technology cannot read flipped Unicode characters as normal words — they may read each character by its Unicode name. Use flipped text for short accents or decorative purposes, not for content that needs to be readable by everyone.

Absolutely. Everything runs in your browser. The text you type never leaves your device — no server processing, no logging and no data storage. Close the tab and it is gone.
This generator offers six flip modes: upside down (flip + reverse), reversed only, mirrored only, flipped letters only, upside down without reversing, and backwards text. Each produces a different visual effect.
