What does this Words to Number tool do?

This free online words to number converter translates English number words into their numeric digit form. Type one hundred twenty-three and get 123. Paste twelve lakh thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven and get 1,234,567. The tool also works in reverse — switch to Numbers → Words and type a digit like 123 to get the words back.

Everything runs locally in your browser. The words you enter never leave your device, there's no signup, and there are no usage limits.

What the parser handles

The parsing algorithm scans the input from left to right, accumulating values as it encounters each number word. It handles all the common ways people write numbers in English:

FeatureInputOutput
Basic numbersforty-two42
The word "and"one hundred and five105
Hyphenated tenstwenty-one21
Decimalsthree point one four3.14
Negativesminus forty-two-42
International scalesone million two hundred thousand1,200,000
Indian scalestwelve lakh thirty-four thousand12,34,000

International vs Indian numbering systems

The same number is written using different scale words depending on which system you use. This tool recognises both:

SystemScale wordsExample (1,234,567)
Internationalthousand, million, billion, trillionone million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven
Indianthousand, lakh, crore, arab, kharabtwelve lakh thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven

The Indian system is used across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. The International system is used in most English-speaking countries. Switching the numbering system changes how the output is grouped — with commas every three digits in the International system, and in the Indian grouping pattern (first three digits, then in twos) for the Indian system.

How the parser works

The conversion algorithm processes the input word by word, maintaining two running totals: a current value for the group being built, and a total that accumulates completed groups.

  1. Small numbers (one through ninety-nine) are added to current.
  2. The word "hundred" multiplies current by 100.
  3. Scale words (thousand, million, lakh, crore, etc.) multiply the current group by the scale value and add it to the running total, then reset current to zero.
  4. The word "point" signals the start of a decimal fraction. Every word after that is treated as a single digit.
  5. The word "and" is skipped — it's a connector with no numeric value.

This left-to-right greedy approach correctly handles every valid English number phrase, including complex combinations like one billion two hundred thirty-four million five hundred sixty-seven thousand eight hundred ninety.

The converter supports numbers up to 999,999,999,999,999 (about one quadrillion) in the International system, and up to the same magnitude in the Indian system using units like lakh, crore, arab, and kharab.
Yes. Use point to separate the decimal part: three point one four becomes 3.14. Use minus or negative before the number for negatives: minus forty-two becomes -42.
