What does this PDF Compressor do?
This free online PDF compressor reduces the file size of any PDF — entirely in your browser. It works by optimizing the internal structure of the PDF: enabling object streams, removing redundant metadata, and cleaning up unused references. Everything is done with pdf-lib, a fast open-source JavaScript library that reads and writes PDF files directly.
Unlike compressors that upload your file to a server, this tool never sends your PDF anywhere. It works locally on your device, which means your documents stay completely private. You can compress contracts, invoices, reports, scanned pages, or any other PDF without worrying about who sees it.
Results vary depending on the PDF. Text-heavy documents often compress 10–30%. PDFs with large embedded images may compress more. Some PDFs that are already well-optimized may not shrink at all — that's normal and expected. The tool always shows you the before-and-after size so you can decide whether the compressed version is worth keeping.
How to compress a PDF
- Upload your PDF: Drag and drop a PDF file into the upload zone, or click to browse your device.
- Choose a compression level: Light is fast and safe. Medium is the recommended all-rounder. Strong applies maximum compression.
- Optional settings: Toggle Strip metadata to remove title, author, and other document info. Toggle Use object streams for better compression on large PDFs.
- Click Compress PDF & Download: The tool loads the PDF, applies the optimizations, and prepares a smaller file for download.
- Download: The compressed PDF downloads automatically. You can also click Download Compressed PDF in the result panel.

When would you need to compress a PDF?
- Email attachments: Many email providers limit attachment size. Compress a PDF so it fits under the cap.
- Form submissions: Portals often reject PDFs over a certain size. Compress first so your upload goes through.
- Cloud storage: Save space by shrinking large PDFs before uploading them to Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive.
- Web uploads: Keep your website or CMS under its file-size limits by compressing PDFs before publishing.
- Scanned documents: Scans are often bulky. Compression strips redundant data and shrinks the file.
- Archiving: Store more documents in the same amount of space by compressing them first.
