What does this marks percentage calculator do?

This free online marks percentage calculator instantly converts your exam marks into a percentage. Whether you want to know your score for a single subject, calculate your aggregate percentage across all subjects, or check what grade your marks correspond to, this tool does the math for you in seconds.

Instead of reaching for a calculator or doing mental arithmetic, just enter your marks obtained and the total (maximum) marks for each subject. The calculator shows your percentage for each subject individually, your overall aggregate percentage, and a grade based on the standard grading scale. You can also see your total marks obtained versus the total maximum marks.

This tool is useful for students checking their board exam results, university semester scores, competitive exam performance, or even teachers computing percentages for a class of students. Everything runs in your browser, so your marks never leave your device.

How to calculate percentage from marks

The formula for calculating percentage from marks is simple and universal.

Percentage = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100

For example, if you scored 78 out of 100 in a subject, your percentage is (78 ÷ 100) × 100 = 78%. If you scored 360 out of 500 in an exam, your percentage is (360 ÷ 500) × 100 = 72%.

Single subject vs multiple subjects

For a single subject, the formula is straightforward: divide the marks obtained by the maximum marks and multiply by 100.

For multiple subjects, you have two options. The first is to calculate the percentage for each subject separately and then average them. The second — and more common for exam results — is to add up all marks obtained across subjects, add up all maximum marks, and then apply the same formula to the totals. This calculator uses the second method, which is what most boards and universities use for aggregate results.

Overall Percentage = (Sum of All Marks Obtained ÷ Sum of All Maximum Marks) × 100

Understanding your grade

Many schools, colleges, and boards assign letter grades based on percentage. While exact thresholds vary by institution, a common scale is shown below. Always check your institution's specific grading policy for the official scale.

80% – 89%A / A1Excellent
70% – 79%B / B1Very Good
60% – 69%C / B2Good
50% – 59%D / C1Satisfactory
40% – 49%E / C2Pass

Tips for calculating your percentage accurately

  • Use the correct total marks. Make sure you enter the maximum marks for each subject, not the passing marks. For example, if a subject is out of 100, enter 100 — not 33 or 40.
  • Include all subjects. If you're calculating an overall percentage, add every subject that counts toward your result. Some boards exclude certain subjects or use a "best of" rule — check your board's policy.
  • Check for grace marks or moderation. Many boards apply grace marks or moderation. Your official marksheet may show a slightly different percentage than a raw calculation.
  • Understand theory vs practical weighting. If a subject has both theory and practical components, enter the combined marks and the combined maximum — not each separately.
  • Round only at the end. If your board rounds percentages to two decimal places, don't round intermediate values. Calculate the final percentage first, then round.
  • Verify with your marksheet. Use this calculator to double-check, but always trust the percentage printed on your official marksheet for applications and admissions.

Frequently asked questions

Marks percentage = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100. For example, if you scored 450 out of 600, your percentage is (450 ÷ 600) × 100 = 75%.
Yes. Add as many subjects as you need. The calculator shows each subject's percentage separately and also calculates your overall aggregate percentage.
Overall percentage = (Sum of all marks obtained ÷ Sum of all maximum marks) × 100. This gives equal weight to each mark, not each subject. For example, if Subject A is out of 100 and Subject B is out of 50, Subject A carries more weight in the total.
Grades vary by institution, but a common scale is: 90%+ = A+, 80–89% = A, 70–79% = B, 60–69% = C, 50–59% = D, 40–49% = E, and below 40% = F. Always check your school's specific grading policy.
