Overall Grade

What does this grade calculator do?

This free online grade calculator helps students and teachers compute weighted course grades, overall percentages, and the score needed on a final exam to reach a target grade. Whether your course uses categories like homework, quizzes, midterms, and finals — each with its own weight — this tool does the math instantly.

Instead of manually multiplying each grade by its weight and adding everything up, just enter your categories, grades, and weights. The calculator shows your weighted grade, the equivalent letter grade, and a breakdown of how each category contributes to your overall score.

There's also a dedicated final exam calculator. Enter your current grade, how much the final is worth, and your target grade, and the tool tells you exactly what score you need on the final to hit your goal. If the required score is above 100%, the calculator warns you that the target may not be reachable without extra credit.

How weighted grades are calculated

Most courses don't use a simple average. A final exam is typically worth more than a single homework assignment, and a midterm usually outweighs a quiz. This is called weighting.

The formula for a weighted grade is:

Weighted Grade = Σ(Grade × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weight)

In plain English: multiply each category's grade by its weight, add all those products together, then divide by the sum of all weights. If your weights add up to 100%, the result is your overall course grade as a percentage.

Example: Calculating a weighted grade

Suppose your course has these categories:

CategoryYour GradeWeightGrade × Weight
Homework92%20%92 × 20 = 1840
Quizzes84%15%84 × 15 = 1260
Midterm78%25%78 × 25 = 1950
Final Exam88%40%88 × 40 = 3520

Sum of products = 1840 + 1260 + 1950 + 3520 = 8570

Sum of weights = 20 + 15 + 25 + 40 = 100

Weighted grade = 8570 ÷ 100 = 85.7%

What if my weights don't add up to 100%?

That's fine. The calculator normalizes automatically. If your graded categories only add up to 70% (because 30% of the course hasn't been graded yet), the weighted average is calculated over that 70%. This gives you your current grade based on work completed so far.

How to calculate what you need on the final exam

The final exam calculator uses this formula:

Required Final Score = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight

For example, if your current grade is 86%, the final is worth 30%, and you want a 90% course grade:

Required = (90 − 86 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 60.2) ÷ 0.30 = 29.8 ÷ 0.30 = 99.3%

That's high — you'd need almost a perfect score. If the required score exceeds 100%, the target isn't mathematically reachable without extra credit or a curve.

Standard letter grade scale

Grades vary by institution, but most schools and universities use a scale similar to the one below. Always check your school's specific grading policy for the official scale.

PercentageLetter GradeDescription
90% – 100%AExcellent
80% – 89%BVery Good
70% – 79%CGood
60% – 69%DSatisfactory
Below 60%FFail

Some institutions use finer gradations: 93–96% = A, 90–92% = A−, 87–89% = B+, and so on. The grade boundaries can shift by a few percentage points depending on the school.

Tips for improving your grade

  • Know your weights. Check your syllabus for the exact weight of each category. A 5% quiz and a 40% final are not equally important.
  • Focus on high-weight categories. Improving a 30% category by 10 points has three times the impact of improving a 10% category by the same amount.
  • Calculate your required final score early. Knowing you need a 95% on the final is better discovered weeks in advance than the night before.
  • Don't ignore low-weight categories. They add up. A string of zeros in a 10% homework category can drop your grade by a full letter.
  • Use the what-if mode. Try different final exam scores to see the range of possible outcomes. This helps you set realistic study goals.
  • Verify with your instructor. Use this calculator as a guide, but confirm your official grade with your teacher or the course portal.

Frequently asked questions

Weighted grade = Σ(Grade × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weight). Each category's grade is multiplied by its weight, the products are added together, and the total is divided by the sum of all weights. If weights add up to 100%, the result is your overall course grade.
Required final score = (Target grade − Current grade × (1 − Final weight)) ÷ Final weight. Enter your current grade, target grade, and the final exam's weight as a percentage, and the calculator solves for the score you need.
If the calculator shows a required score above 100%, your target grade is not mathematically reachable without extra credit, a curve, or additional assignments. You may need to adjust your target or speak with your instructor.
Grades vary by institution, but a common scale is: 90%+ = A, 80–89% = B, 70–79% = C, 60–69% = D, and below 60% = F. Some schools use plus/minus modifiers (A+, A−, B+, etc.). Always check your school's specific grading policy.
Yes. Add as many categories as you need. Give each one a name, a grade percentage, and a weight percentage. The calculator handles any number of categories.
The calculator normalizes the weights automatically. If your categories add up to 80%, the final grade is calculated as a weighted average over that 80%. This is useful if some work hasn't been graded yet.
