What does this date difference calculator do?

This tool calculates the exact difference between any two dates and times. Enter a start date and an end date (with optional times), and it returns the result broken down into years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds — plus total values in each individual unit. It's the most complete way to answer the question "how much time is between these two moments?" without pulling out a calculator or writing custom code.

Unlike simple day-counting tools, this calculator handles the full time component. If you're measuring the gap between two timestamps in a log file, tracking elapsed time between two events down to the second, or simply curious how many hours separate two specific moments, this tool has you covered.

For situations where only working days matter, switch to Business Days mode. That mode skips weekends and any custom holidays you specify, giving you the exact number of business days in the range — a common requirement for contract deadlines, shipping estimates, and project planning.

How to calculate the difference between two dates

  1. Choose your mode: Use All Days for the full date-and-time difference, or Business Days to count only working days.
  2. Enter the start date: Pick the earlier date and, optionally, a time and seconds value.
  3. Enter the end date: Pick the later date and, optionally, a time and seconds value.
  4. Adjust options if needed: In Business Days mode, customize the weekend days and paste any holidays you want to exclude.
  5. Click Calculate Difference: The result appears instantly, broken down into every relevant unit — years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds — plus totals.

Why use this calculator?

Full time precision

Includes optional time and seconds fields, so you can calculate differences down to the second — not just whole days.

Every unit at once

Get the result in years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds, plus total values in days, weeks, hours, minutes, and seconds.

Business days mode

Switch to working-days counting to skip weekends and custom holidays. Perfect for contract deadlines and shipping estimates.

Leap year handling

Correctly handles leap years, month lengths, and century rules, so the count is always accurate no matter how far apart the dates are.

100% private

Everything runs in your browser. No dates or times are sent to a server. Close the tab and the data is gone.

Works offline

Once the page loads, the calculator keeps working without an internet connection. Perfect for flights or remote areas.

Common use cases

Development and debugging

  • Log analysis: Measure the elapsed time between two events in a log file down to the second.
  • Performance testing: Calculate the gap between two timestamps for benchmark reports.
  • API response times: Verify the time difference between request and response timestamps.

Project management

  • Duration tracking: Measure how long a task or phase actually took, in days, hours, and minutes.
  • Deadline verification: Confirm the exact time remaining before a project milestone.
  • Retrospective analysis: Compare planned versus actual durations across sprints.

Business and finance

  • Invoice aging: Calculate how many days, hours, and minutes an invoice is overdue.
  • Interest accrual: Count the exact time between transactions for daily-interest calculations.
  • Contract terms: Verify the precise duration of a fixed-term agreement.

Personal planning

  • Countdowns: See how many days, hours, minutes, and seconds until an event.
  • Milestone tracking: Measure how long ago something happened in any unit you choose.
  • Elapsed time: Find out exactly how much time passed between two personal events.

Health and science

  • Medical timing: Calculate elapsed time between doses, tests, or observations.
  • Scientific experiments: Measure the exact time between two observations or events.
  • Astronomy: Compute time differences between celestial events with second-level precision.

How the date difference is calculated

The calculator converts both dates (with their optional times) into a single numeric value — the number of milliseconds since the Unix epoch — and then subtracts one from the other. That millisecond difference is then decomposed into the units you see in the result.

Unit Derived from Example
Total seconds Milliseconds ÷ 1000 If diff = 5,000 ms → 5 seconds
Total minutes Milliseconds ÷ 60,000 If diff = 3,600,000 ms → 60 minutes
Total hours Milliseconds ÷ 3,600,000 If diff = 7,200,000 ms → 2 hours
Total days Milliseconds ÷ 86,400,000 If diff = 172,800,000 ms → 2 days
Years, months, days Calendar decomposition from the start date From Jan 1 to Mar 15 = 2 months, 14 days
Time components Remainder after subtracting whole days From 10:00 to 14:30 = 4h 30m 0s

Because months vary in length, the "months and days" result depends on where the two dates fall. The total-days figure is the unambiguous answer; the other formats are convenient ways of expressing the same span.

Frequently asked questions

Enter a start date (and optionally a time) and an end date (and optionally a time), then click Calculate. The tool returns the difference in years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds, plus total values in each unit.
Yes. There are optional time fields for both the start and end dates, plus seconds fields for extra precision. If you leave them blank, the calculator uses midnight (00:00:00) as the default time.
Yes. The calculator uses JavaScript's Date object, which correctly handles leap years, including the February 29 rule and century exceptions.
The calculator will still return the magnitude of the difference, and it will flag that the end date is earlier than the start date. This is useful for verifying time elapsed in either direction.
Yes. Switch to Business Days mode and the calculator will exclude weekends and any custom holidays you add. You can customize which days count as weekends.
The calculator returns the raw difference between the two moments (end minus start). For example, from Jan 1 to Jan 5 is 4 days. In business days mode, both endpoints are counted, since they're both potentially working days.
Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermark, no hidden charges. Use it as many times as you want.
Absolutely. Everything runs in your browser. No dates or times are sent to any server. There is no server processing, no logging, and no data storage.
