Discount Calculator
Calculate the final sale price, total savings, discount percentage, or the original price before a discount. Handles stacked discounts, multiple currencies, and shows every step of the math. Free, private, and runs entirely in your browser.
Percent Off Calculator
Enter the original price and the discount percentage. Get the final sale price and how much you save.
Sale = $80 × (1 − 25/100) = $60, savings = $20.
What is a discount?
A discount is a reduction in the price of a product or service. It's one of the oldest and most universal retail tools — used to move inventory, reward loyal customers, compete on price, and create a sense of urgency around a purchase. In everyday language, "discount" and "markdown" are often used interchangeably, though technically a markdown is a permanent price reduction and a discount is usually temporary or promotional.
Discounts come in several forms. A percentage discount takes a fraction off the original price (e.g. 20% off). A fixed amount discount takes a set amount off (e.g. $15 off). A stacked discount applies two or more discounts one after another (e.g. 20% off, then an extra 10% at checkout). This calculator handles all three, plus the two reverse problems: finding the discount percentage when you know both prices, and finding the original price when you know the sale price and the discount.
How to use the discount calculator
Pick the mode that matches your problem:
- Percent Off: Enter the original price and the percentage discount. Get the final price and how much you save.
- Fixed Amount Off: Enter the original price and a dollar (or any currency) amount off. See the final price and the effective percentage discount.
- Find Discount %: Enter the original and sale prices. Find out exactly what percentage was taken off.
- Find Original Price: Enter the sale price and the discount percentage. Work backwards to find the original price.
- Stacked Discounts: Enter the original price and up to three sequential discounts. See the true final price and effective total discount — remember that stacked discounts are multiplied, not added.
Every mode shows step-by-step working so you can follow the math. Click any result card to copy the value. All results update live as you type.
Discount formulas used by this calculator
Savings = Original Price × (Discount % / 100)
Effective Discount % = (Amount Off / Original Price) × 100
Effective Total Discount % = 1 − (1 − d1/100) × (1 − d2/100) × (1 − d3/100)
Note: Stacked discounts are not additive. Two 20% discounts stacked give 36% off, not 40%.
Tax is normally applied after the discount, not before.

Real-world uses for a discount calculator
Shopping and retail
Quickly check whether that "50% off" tag really is a good deal. Compare sale prices across stores. Verify the discount at checkout. If a store promises "extra 20% off the sale price," this calculator tells you what you'll actually pay.
Restaurant and service bills
Calculate tips, service charges, or promotional discounts on a bill. Split the total between friends after a discount. Figure out the effective percentage when a coupon gives "$10 off a $50 minimum."
Business and pricing
Small business owners use discounts to move slow inventory, reward repeat customers, or run seasonal promotions. This calculator helps set the right price and understand the real impact on margins.
Personal finance
Track how much you save with coupons, cashback, and promo codes. Compare subscription deals. Evaluate whether a "buy 2 get 1 free" offer is actually better than a straight percentage discount.
Education and homework
Discount problems are a standard part of middle school and high school math, and they come up in business courses and personal finance classes. Every mode shows the full working so students can follow the reasoning.
Common discount quick reference
Here's what a few common discounts look like on a $100 item, plus the effective rate for stacked discounts.
| Discount | You pay | You save | Stacked with 10% extra |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5% off | $95.00 | $5.00 | $85.50 (14.5% effective) |
| 10% off | $90.00 | $10.00 | $81.00 (19% effective) |
| 15% off | $85.00 | $15.00 | $76.50 (23.5% effective) |
| 20% off | $80.00 | $20.00 | $72.00 (28% effective) |
| 25% off | $75.00 | $25.00 | $67.50 (32.5% effective) |
| 30% off | $70.00 | $30.00 | $63.00 (37% effective) |
| 40% off | $60.00 | $40.00 | $54.00 (46% effective) |
| 50% off | $50.00 | $50.00 | $45.00 (55% effective) |
| 60% off | $40.00 | $60.00 | $36.00 (64% effective) |
| 70% off | $30.00 | $70.00 | $27.00 (73% effective) |
| 75% off | $25.00 | $75.00 | $22.50 (77.5% effective) |
| 80% off | $20.00 | $80.00 | $18.00 (82% effective) |
Notice how stacking a second discount never simply adds to the first. A 50% + 10% stack gives 55% off, not 60%. This is why "extra 10% off" deals are often less generous than they sound.
